What is the GLORIA Community Day?

Traditionally, research has been almost exclusively conducted within the realm of professional, well-equipped laboratories. However, harnessing ‘people-power’ now offers an alternative route to scientific discovery, through games, citizen science and participatory experiments. GLORIA is a worldwide astronomy project aimed at citizens, amateur astronomers, high school students, undergraduates and professional scientists. Participants are encouraged to make observations with professional telescopes for free and to help develop new experiments to engage the widest possible community in contributing to research. This transformative approach motivates learning through exploration of the unknown and opens up the thrill of discovery to everyone. The aim of this Community Day is to put our heads together to come up with new ways of using GLORIA, in order to engage people at all (and no) levels of expertise to use this incredible resource.

Who is it for?

If you are….a teacher, lecturer, amateur astronomer, hacker, community builder, artist, scientist or educational innovator, motivated by the philosophy that ‘Learning is Doing’ and you are keen to help create novel content and/or tools for learning through astronomy research, then this is the right event for you. No previous knowledge is required!

What will happen?

The day will be bookended by a series of highly engaging, interactive talks from scientists, artists and educators about astronomy, GLORIA, interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on science.
See the programme.

In the middle of the day, participants from different backgrounds and training will come together in groups. In a facilitated environment, each group will explore ideas that they would like to see implemented in GLORIA. These ideas will be documented and lead to actual implementation. The facilitators will help guide the participants and be able to answer specific questions as they arise.
You can already pitch ideas using the dedicated form. It will be really useful for us to get a sense of your area of interest and what you would like to get out of the day, to help us plan the best possible experience for participants.
All participants are free to carry a poster (A0 format) describing a subject or activity related to the topics of the meeting. In this case we ask you to make also available to us a digital version we can publish on the GLORIA website together with the oral presentations.

Where, when?

Registration for the day is required to allow us to plan the event. Please fill in the form to tell us you are joining. Be sure to get signed up before April 30, 2014. Registration is free.
