  1. Aims of the Workshop

    The specific goals of the workshop are to:
    1. inform the general astronomical community of the exciting scientific opportunities offered by the refurbished HST in the area of ultraviolet to near infrared imaging and spectroscopy;
    2. provide insight in and detailed information on the new HST imaging and spectroscopic capabilities and characteristics and general information about the mission;
    3. provide more detailed information about initial calibration observations, the COS Guaranteed Time (GTO) observing programs and plans for Early Release Observations (ERO) and Early Release Science with both COS and WFC3;
    4. provide future General observers (GOs) with an opportunity to present ideas for open time programs;
    5. provide future GOs with details in the area of astronomical observing templates, observation planning, data reduction, and data products and archiving;
    6. provide a forum where putative GO proposers can meet each other and exchange ideas, and interact directly with members of the instrument teams and STScI staff;
    7. help identify key scientific topics with the highest scientific importance and impact and the observing programs of maximum long-term value to the entire astronomical community. These key programs may require large amounts of observing time on one or more targets or sky areas, collaborations of many astronomers from several institutions and innovative ideas or applications.
